Chapter 1: Revellion

Scene One – Sunset

“Wowwww… it’s so beautiful!”

*Sounds of Waves Crashing*

“… What now?”

*and receding.*

“The sunset today… is peach colored! It’s making the ocean a sort of silver. You know, like the silver that you can see through… and it has hints of deep green, sort of like Glass!”

I made a sad attempt to get up so I could see what she was rambling on about, but my injuries hadn’t healed yet.

“… Hmph… I think you mean ‘Clear’ … and the green tint comes from light refra-“

“Yeah, Yeah, Whatever! It’s Clear!! Happy now?!”

She turned away from lecturing me and got back on her tip toes so that, once more, she could gaze out at the sunset through a porthole, the one small source of warm light that they allowed us to have within these walls of dark, cold and gray.

“Hmm, I like the reflection of the sun in the water too, it’s golden! And it’s dancing… In the waves…”

They were keeping us in a room below deck, and so, during high tide, we were beneath sea level.

“I’m surprised you can see the sunset through that small sliver of an opening. All I see is water blocking the window up from where I am…”

She continued to ignore me, as the light from the sun was losing its battle against the surface of the water steadily rising in the tide as it pushed against our little circle of freedom.

“… You like the colors of a peach sunset that much, huh? I thought you preferred a cooler color palette…”

Finally, like the crashing waves of water and sand receding back into their deathless ebb and flow, the last glimmer of sunlight was lifted away from her eyes. She closes them and turns her head down to the floor as if she is ashamed.

“… Peach, Green, Golden… those are all fine…”

Their room and porthole window was now completely submerged under the tide; releasing a chill into the air. The tide is rising rapidly, likely sign of a storm at sea.

Her hands tightened their grip as she clenches onto the cold, metal frame around the window. Her eyes shaking under her eyelids until she opens them, staring unstably into the floor of the boat below her feet as if she was X-raying past it and looking into the depths of the ocean itself.

“I’ll accept any color sunset, as long as I don’t have to see RED anymore…”
